Kate Middleton discloses her cancer diagnosis:केट मिडलटन ने अपने कैंसर निदान का खुलासा किया।
According to Dr. Karlan, the objective behind this chemotherapy is that it will stop cancer from coming back and allow the patient to enjoy a complete life.
After receiving a cancer diagnosis, Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, disclosed on Friday that she has been receiving prophylactic chemotherapy. She did, however, say that the therapy began in late February and declined to say what kind or stage of cancer she has.
Princess Catherine revealed in a video broadcast by Kensington Palace that she had undergone significant stomach surgery in London and had previously believed her illness to be non-cancerous. "The procedure went well. But examinations following the procedure revealed the presence of malignancy," she continued.
Following her medical team’s advice, she began undergoing preventative chemotherapy and is now in the early stages of the same, Kate Middleton said.
PREVENTATIVE CHEMISTRY: WHAT IS IT?
"Preventative chemotherapy" refers to a broad category of medications or cancer treatments; it is not a medical phrase. Time.com quoted Dr. Katherine Van Loon, a medical professor and gastrointestinal oncologist at the University of California, San Francisco, as saying, "It's not a medical term, but I think we all agree that she is referring to adjuvant chemotherapy." Van Loon is not directly related to Kate's case.
According to Van Loon, the majority of the chemotherapy medications used in treatment are also utilized for patients with advanced or active cancer.
Dr. Jeremy Jones, interim chief of the Mayo Clinic's hematology and oncology department, who has no personal connection to Kate's case, clarified that, depending on the kind of cancer, research has shown that receiving chemotherapy for three to six months following surgery can help lower the chance that the disease will return. According to Jones, "it's standard of care to reduce the risk of recurrence for many types of cancer."
According to Jones, the choice to proceed with adjuvant chemotherapy is based on a number of variables, the primary one being the cancer's stage.
Stage of cancer means whether the cancerous cells have spread to lymph nodes or other body parts, Jones said, adding that, adjuvant chemo is mostly taken up for cancers in the later stage that carry a higher risk of coming back.
Adjuvant chemotherapy is typically recommended "if there is a possibility that the patient may experience a recurrence of the cancer in the future due to the pathology of the tumor or their clinical history." According to Morningkhabre.com, Van Loon stated, "It's something to give extra assurance that the caner won't come back or metastasize in the future."
In the interest of being "ultra conservative," physicians may also take into account adjuvant chemotherapy for a younger patient.
PREVENTATIVE VS REGULAR CHEMO
Doctors may administer any of the numerous medications available to treat advanced cancer after removing all visible cancerous remnants during surgery, according to Dr. Jones of the Mayo Clinic.
Jones continued, "It's possible that the doses are administered in smaller doses at times, but generally they are administered in the same doses as for treating cancer."
Dr. Beth Karlan, the director of women's health research at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Centre, who has no personal connection to Kate's case, observed that patients getting adjuvant chemotherapy might require a shorter course of treatment than those receiving regular chemotherapy to address severe disease.
Most of the time, infusions of medications are given over several hours in a hospital or other institution. However, it is noteworthy that some people might require more time; in such cases, patients might be sent home with a port and a pump that would deliver the chemotherapy constantly over the course of about a day, according to Time.com. The majority of prophylactic chemotherapy has a minimum three-month duration.
According to Karlan, there is ample evidence that adjuvant chemotherapy improves overall survival, prolongs patient life, and may even lead to a cure. With this chemotherapy, it is hoped that the cancer will not return and that a full life will be possible. A great deal of other individuals will benefit from the example she is setting with her message. Karlan's statement was cited.
